Basically, this means that you could buy a 100TC sheet that is actually made of 250TC 4-ply fabric, so be aware of merchandisers that offer a high thread count fabric but don’t list the ply. When a sheet is made from multi-ply fabrics it is thicker, heavier and the quality isn’t superior.
